Pasture Pod Update

We have two litters going right now.  One is a litter of five, the other is a litter of seven.  Today, I got them together and decided to pasture them.

At their current size, I can fit all 12 in a tractor.  I didn’t have any issues with escapees and they seemed to focus well on eating the fresh grass.

I’m not sure how apparent it is from the picture, but they did a pretty good job clearing the grass.  I moved the tractor about once an hour.  Every time I moved it onto a new patch of grass, they dutifully hopped down from the safety box and started mowing again.

Our biggest issues come from predators, both wild and domestic.  At one point during the day, there was a Husky jumping around the pod, barking and terrorizing the bunnies.  I chased him off, but I can see a portable electric fence in our future.

I’ve got another pod almost completed.  Hopefully we will have two going by May.  I think between grazing, fodder, and pellets, we’re going to cut the cost of feed by quite a bit, while improving the nutrition we’re giving the rabbits.

Stay tuned.  We’re finally on board with fodder.  I’m planning an article on that soon.

Pax Domini Sit Semper Vobiscum,

Mark Oliver Howes
